Communication Support

Welcome!

In this Menu, you will find the Core Board and Fringe Vocabulary Boards that we use at the College to support communication.

What is a Core Board?

A Core Board contains the most commonly used words in everyday conversation. These words help learners express themselves across different situations.

Tip: Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) tools, like the Core Board, are helpful for everyone (even those who speak).

What are Fringes?

Fringe boards include topic-specific vocabulary. They allow learners to talk about a particular subject using words that are not on the Core Board.
If you need specific fringe boards, please let us know – we’re happy to support you with this.

How to Use Them

  • Print the boards on A4 paper and laminate them for durability.
  • You can:
    • Attach them to a lanyard or cross-body strap for easy carrying.
    • Stick them on a wall using tac (optional).

However, this is optional and depends on the learner’s preference and how they choose to access it.

Why is This Important?

These boards represent the learner’s voice. They should have access to them at all times so they can communicate effectively. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at rufayda.rafiq@phoenixcollege.london
