A Word From The Head 27.5.22

Dear parents and carers,

It is hard to believe that another half-term has come to an end. This has been fruitful half-term, with some fantastic achievements!

The main shout-out goes to our Careers Team: Natasha Wood (Career Lead), Alfie Begum (Enterprise Lead) and Chi Yilmaz (Employment Engagement Coordinator). They have now placed all our students into work placements. This is such an incredible achievement, and I could not be prouder of our students for working so hard to accomplish this. 100% of students in work placements!

Another huge celebration is the work that our Curriculum Lead, Ricky Nunn, has developed with Open Awards to create pre-entry level accreditations. This huge piece of work will now allow all our students to achieve a certificate in an accreditation recognized nationally.

I also have to mention Alfie’s tenacity when working with our Catering Instructor, Mohammed Ahmed, to set up our brand-new market stall at Wentworth Street. This is an innovative and creative approach to Enterprise and I am excited to see this project developing even further.

Finally, a huge thank you to the whole team for working so hard to organize this week’s trip to the Elizabeth Line on its opening day! For the years to come, our students will be able to say “I was one of the first people in London to ride the Elizabeth Line”. Our students are, once again, making history. Photos on pages 4 and 5.

It has not been an easy term organizing staffing cover and I thank you for your patience and support with the changes that we are implementing at Phoenix College. It is an honour to be part of this community and to see our students ‘changing the game’.

Have a restful half-term break! Students will be back to Phoenix College on Tuesday 7th of June.

CORE BOARD TRAINING FOR PARENTS – OPEN HOUSE: 23rd JUNE

As requested by many parents and carers during our EHCP Annual Reviews, we are organizing our first training for parents on the 23rd June.

Core Boards are a fundamental communication tool for many of our students and it would be great if you could attend this session. We are hosting two trainings on that day: one between 3.30-4.30 and one between 5.00-6.00.

Please save the date!

THIS HALF-TERM

Patrick (P3) was a very polite and effective seller in this week’s market stall. He welcomed costumers with a big smile and positive attitude. Well done, Patrick! June O’Brien (TA)

Nae’ma (P2) has taken her experience of working in Phoenix Café to Starbucks well in her stride! Nae’ma was happy and excited to get the role of café assistant and showed how far she has come. She has been completing tasks with minimal support from staff and working on remembering her route to work independently. Jorna Khan, Leading Learning Mentor

Thomas (P1) has been making more friends at College this half term. He is becoming increasingly confident and it is a pleasure to watch him interacting with his peers during break. Well done, Thomas! P1 Team

This term in Digital World, P3 class has been learning to distinguish “street photography” images from different photos. We’ve been looking at pictures taken by street photographers from all around the world. In the middle of term, we went out to our local community with our digital cameras to take our own street photos. We called this project “Streets of Bow”. Students were happy to pose for each other and by the end of term they learned how to develop and edit these images on the computer. Frank Kasa (eLearning Instructor)
